There
is a trend for physical therapy offices to offer “wellness
programs” for their patients. These programs
usually consist of people who pay a fee for the ability to
exercise on equipment located in physical therapy offices
and under the supervision of physical therapists.
Many states
are recommending or even enacting laws that require an AED
program be implemented in certain industries. California
is one such state actually mandating that as of July 1, 2007,
every “health studio” be equipped with an AED and
trained personnel. By their definition, physical therapy
offices with wellness programs qualify under this law. Each
California physical therapy office with a wellness program
that currently does not have an AED program is in violation
of this new law.
Even states without current laws should understand
the importance of maintaining an AED program. The American
Heart Association reports sudden cardiac arrest causes over
325,000 deaths every year in out-of-the-hospital locations
or in hospital emergency departments. Most states allow
a “Good Samaritan” exemption from liability for
any individual who renders emergency treatment with a defibrillator.
